Helm's Deep
Helm's Deep is a reproduction of one of the famous places in Tolkien's saga: The Lords of the Rings. This one's inspired mostly from the film, 'The Two Towers' by Peter Jackson. I gathered references and drawings for about a month before I started to produce the scene.

I made this scene to learn the Unreal Development Kit (UDK), and see how far I could go with terrain experiments.

The making of Helm's Deep took me about 6 weeks.

Grass and rock meshes were placed on the terrain using the Staticmesh mode. The skydome is content from Epic Games.

Small objects like barrels and firecamps were added to bring a better sense of scale. The war tents and particles were added later to give life to the scene.

Almost every texture in the environment comes from sculpted content.

The inside of the fortress is detailed with various decal actors to break the tiling of stone walls and making it look older, like it already met war several times.
Decal actors were a great way to save geometry and time on the demolishing process of this fortress.

Even if the fortress isn't an easy shape, I was able to use modular assets massively. I also used vertex color blending for almost every object in the scene, giving the opportunity to paint various hues and color variations.

The texture sheet made from all the diffuse content I created for this environment.
